Home gardens and urban parks in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka agricultural lands are grouped in to two categories. (a) The holdings less than 20 acres defined as small holdings and (b) The rest defined as estates or large holdings. There are about 3.3 million units in the small holding sector out of which 1.5 million was enumerated in the category less than 40 perches in extent. The rest 1.8 million was found to be more than 40 perches or their produce mainly devoted for sales purposes. (Census of Agriculture 2002) Parcels of land less than 40 perches are mainly were primary home gardens. The land owners usually try to include several plant species in the garden. Flowering plants, fruit trees, spices, herbs, grasses and medicinal plants play prominent roles among them.

A public Park is a recreational park open to all members of the public. Public parks are maintained by government personnel and financed by taxes. Urban parks are generally located in urban and sub urban areas and these are areas prepared to serve for people living in urban areas. Facilities and spaces for observation of plants and animals, strolling, sports and resting are all available in a city or urban park. Large lawns and arboreta are features usually included in an urban park.
