As they unearth the remains of prehuman and human settlements, archaeologists and physical anthropologists face the additional problem of dating what they find. It is easy to determine the relative sequence in which events happened. More remains that are recent are usually found above older once. The problem lies in assigning a definite age to fossil bones, tools, an other remains.
