Obsessive and compulsive disorder

Obsessive and compulsive disorder

Today I am going to talk about a psychiatric condition called obsessive and compulsive disorder. This is very common in the community but sometimes it is not diagnosed as an illness. So due to that, patients may not receive proper treatment. There are two components in obsessive and compulsive disorder. First one is the obsessions and the second one is the compulsions. Let's talk about obsessions. Obsessions are thoughts coming into the mind of the patient without the intention of the patient. Patient can identify those thoughts as foreign. They try to resist these thoughts. But they can not. Compulsions can be described as an obsessional motor act. He is the patient carries out a stereotyped motor act repeatedly and feels a strong urge to do so. Example recurrent handwashing. But these can also occur in other conditions such as depression, schizophrenia and some post encephalitic states.
