Inflammation of the gallbladder acute cholecystitis

During the pathogenesis of cholecystitis obstruction to the outflow tract of the bile from the gallbladder is an important factor. In 95% of the cases of inflammation of the gallbladder a gallstone can be found as the obstructing agent. When the outflow tract is obstructed it stimulates the glandular secretion of the gallbladder and with further progression this may compromise the vascular supply to the gallbladder wall. Inflammatory response may develop to the retained bile within the gallbladder. During these vascular and inflammatory reactions secondary infections also can take place.
Initially cholecystitis may present as a biliary colic. But later the pain progressively increases with severe upper quadrant abdominal pain.
